The Launch of the Galway Soccer Co-operative was attend by well over 100 people in the Meyrick Hotel in Galway city on the 8th December. The event was broadcast live on Galway Bay FM and speakers on the night included the Mayor of Galway City, Donal Lyons, FAI Cheif Excetutive, John Delaney, Galway United Manger, Tommy Dunne, and Galway United Chairperson Bernie O’Connell. It was evident from all the speakers that the story of the rebirth of Galway United FC was a successful one and that the co-operative ownership model that it is proposed the Galway Soccer Co-operative will take in the future is the way forward for a strong and success football club that has its roots firmly in the community.
The committee would like to thank everyone who helped on the launch night, including Iain McDonald, who has provided the pictures from the Launch. They were delighted that over seventy people that signed up for membership on the night, becoming part of a community group whose aim is to promote soccer in the community and develop a sustainable Galway United Football Club at the highest level in Ireland. Membership for the first year has been set at €30 by the working group, which will run the co-op until an AGM is held before the start of the 2015 season. Galway Soccer Co-operative Members will be able to avail of an extended discount price for Galway United season tickets up until January 31 2015, which expired to the general public on December 24th 2014 . They will also get to vote at the AGM for two members of the co-op to join the board of Galway United. These positions are currently held by Nicola Deacy and Tom Quigley from the working group who will sit on the board until the AGM is held.
