Gavan Duffy and Dominick Walsh on behalf of Galway United made a presentation to Terri Farren the wife of the late Mark Farren at the recent match between Galway United and Derry City in the Brandywell.
Mark Farren was born 1 May 1982 in Greencastle, County Donegal, Ireland. He played in the League of Ireland with Derry City, Finn Harps and Monaghan United and with Glenavon in the Irish League. He is Derry City FC’s record goalscorer and, in 2005, was named League of Ireland Player of the Year. He was diagnosed with a brain tumour on Christmas Eve in 2008 when he was playing for Derry City. After a year out to undergo treatment, he returned to the pitch with high hopes that he would remain cancer free. However, in 2015 he was diagnosed with a grade-four brain tumour and his condition deteriorated to such an extent that radical treatment only available in Mexico was seen as his last hope. Mark and his wife Terri travelled to Mexico thanks to a huge fundraising campaign. However, his condition worsened over the following months and in early February 2016 Mark lost his battle with cancer and died with his wife and family by his side.
Galway Soccer co-op and the Galway United Supporter Trust organised the presentation in memory of Mark from all those involved at Galway United FC. The co-op would like to thank the following in assisting with this presentation.
