President Higgins sends message on the occasion of the launch of Galway Soccer Co-operative
Although he shall not be able to attend in person the President of Ireland, Micheal D Higgins, says he shall be `celebrating with us in spirit’ the occasion of the launch of the Galway Soccer Co-op.
In an address to the co-op on the occasion of it’s launch, the President goes on to say.
It gives me great pleasure to send my greetings to the members of Galway Soccer Co-operative Society on the occasion of your official launch.
Over the last number of years, I have been delighted to see fan control of clubs become the dominant model in Irish football. I have also been delighted to welcome representatives of fan-led organisation to Áras an Úachtaráin, in order to show my support for this movement.
The expression of the community ownership of football allows for the development of a sustainable structure of the game in Ireland, while preserving the heritage of our clubs. It will also encourage a vibrant fan and supporter culture in our stadiums.
It is uplifting, therefore, to see this model of supporter cooperative being established in my club. Although I cannot be with you this evening, be assured that I am celebrating with you in Spirit.
